![]() One modern typographer is up in arms about the direct influence of Edward Johnson’s typeface, saying, “Aside from inconsistencies of the weights in Gill Sans, Gill changed proportions between capital height, stroke width and character width. Shortly after, in 1928, Gill Sans was created, which was based on his study of Edward Johnson’s London Underground Typeface. In 1924, Gill moved to Wales and produced the Perpetua font for Morison and the Monotype Corporation, “based on the classic Roman lettering of the Trajan column” (Bear). Gill is perhaps best known for the typeface design of Gill Sans and Perpetua. “ An Essay on Typography combined Gill’s views on typography with his personal view of morality, industrialism, creativity, and craftsmanship.” He discussed that in his mind, “there is a distinct line between the work of the individual (fine craftsmanship) and the mechanized, assembly line work of the industrial age.” (Bear). In 1903, he dropped his architectural training altogether in order to pursue a career as a calligrapher, letter cutter, and monumental mason.Īs a type designer, he also published An Essay on Typography in 1931. ![]() Instead, “he took evening classes in stonemasonry at Westminster Technical Institute and in calligraphy at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, where Edward Johnston, creator of the London Underground typeface, became a strong influence” (Eric Gill). Eric Gill, specifically is well known for his typeface design and modernist contribution to design of the same time as the Bauhaus and new typography.Īlthough he did not attend the Bauhaus, he did wander into the direction of typography following his boredom with architectural training under the Chichester Technical and Art School. A type website summed Gill up very interestingly: “An English sculptor, sign painter, type designer, wannabe social reformer, devout Catholic with unusual sexual behaviour” (“Eric Gill”, ) Along with all of these things, He was also the brother of Max Gill, another renowned graphic designer of the time. It did, however, grow to encompass architecture and design and became one of the most influential currents in modernist design and architecture.ĭuring my search for extra information on the Bauhaus school and the New Typography, I stumbled upon Eric Gill (1882-1940), a designer who lived during the Bauhaus’ school’s reign. Located in Weimar, Germany, the Bauhaus “literally meant ‘house of construction,’ and stood for ‘school of building’” despite the fact that there was no initial architecture school in its earliest years (Pevsner). ![]() Many incredible graphic artists and typographers came out of the Bauhaus between its years of establishment, from 1919 to 1933. ![]()
